New Zealand Introduced Animals > Campbell Island Sheep

Campbell Island Sheep
Domesticated Livestock of Feral Origin – Rare Breed
ORIGIN: Campbell Island, off the southern shores of New Zealand.
BREED DESCRIPTION: Medium to tall breed, mainly white.
USE IN NEW ZEALAND: Preservation of the breed.
GENERAL: The first sheep landed on sub Antarctic Campbell Island in 1895 after a grazing lease had been taken up. Two thousand more were introduced in 1901, and a further thousand in 1902. The first two introductions were merinos, but the last was of an unknown breed. When farming was abandoned in 1931 the remaining 4000 sheep were left to run wild, becoming a feral breed that have adapted to the harsh climate. In 1970 half the island was fenced off and only the sheep in the southern half were left. Currently there is a purebred flock maintained at Winchmore.
