Domesticated Livestock of Feral Origin – Rare Breed 

ORIGIN: Hokonui Hills, Southland, New Zealand. 

BREED DESCRIPTION: Hokonui sheep are lean and light-boned. They have clear narrow faces with alert bright eyes. 

USE IN NEW ZEALAND: Preservation of the breed, meat and wool. 

GENERAL: An interesting breed of wild sheep which have made the rugged and isolated Hokonui Hills their home for more than a century. Hokonui sheep are thought to be descended from early merino sheep. Today only about 100 remain feral. Another 100-150 are being retained in domesticated flocks.
