Arapawa Goat

Domesticated Livestock of Feral Origin – Rare Breed

ORIGIN: Arapawa Island, Marlborough, New Zealand.

BREED DISCRIPTION: Arapawa goats are lean and light-boned; they have clear narrow faces with erect ears and alert bright eyes. They vary in colour but are usually fawn or mid-brown with a dark line down the spine and black marks on the legs.

USE IN NEW ZEALAND: Preservation of the breed. Critically Rare.

GENERAL: Arapawa Goats are thought to be descendants of animals brought on the first ships to visit New Zealand. They are very similar to early English goats. A number of Arapawa goats have been removed from the island over recent years and are now being bred by a few enthusiasts in various places throughout New Zealand. They are also being maintained in a reserve on Arapawa Island itself.
