Aix galericulata

INTRODUCED

ORIGIN: EastAsia and Japan.

HABITAT: Wooded regions with lakes, ponds and streams.

BREEDING: Natural nest sites are in holes and cavities in trees.

FOOD: A wide variety of natural foods including some aquatic plants, insects, seeds (e.g. acorns and grains) and sometimes small fish.

GENERAL: Like the closely related wood duck these birds belong to the perching duck group. They are brightly coloured and have the same kind of natural habitat with very similar breeding patterns in the natural state but have a much greater cultural significance.
