Great Spotted Kiwi eggsIssue Date: 18 February 2008
The NZCT in partnership with DOC have begun a nest egg programme with the Great Spotted Kiwi. There has not been alot of research done on the GSK but it is now thought that the population could be an ageing one. This together with the high mortality rates through predation could mean that this species of kiwi could be more endangered than initially thought. Our first two GSK eggs came from the North Hurunui. These eggs were brought out under difficult circumstances as the terrain is not easy to access by foot. Once the eggs were removed they were air lifted to our facilities at Willowbank Wildlife Reserve where they were incubated until they hatched. The NZCT also received another four GSK eggs from the Paparoa region. These are currently being incubated.
