Princess Anne visits

Issue Date: 3 December 2008

On the 18th November 2008 HRH Princess Anne, who is the Patron of the NZCT, arrived at Willowbank Wildlife Reserve to open our new Public Kiwi Viewing facility.
Princess Anne was given a  brief on what the NZCT has achieved since her last visit in 1995, when she opened the Kiwi Nocturnal House. She was then taken for a tour through the kiwi viewing facility  before declaring the viewing centre open.

The Kiwi viewing Centre project began a few years ago and has been built by a dedicated group of volunteers from the NZCT with a major portion of the funds comming from the Canterbury Community Trust.
Visitors will be taken by a guide through the newly furbished meeting house which has a number of education panels about the features of kiwi, their predators and distribution of the kiwi species.
The tour will then move through to the viewing centre, where the Nest Egg Programme is described. Our visitors will then get the chance to go down to where the incubation room is situated and through state of the art camera equipment will be able to see a kiwi egg being candled and the image projected onto a 52"screen. An explanation  will be given of why we candle eggs and what can be seen from this process.
Visitors will then get a chance to look through a large window into one of the brooder rooms to see a kiwi chick.
