Paparoa GSK chick

Issue Date: 18 February 2009

On February 6th 2008 a Great Spotted Kiwi egg was found on the hill known as 'Baldy' or Mt Watson, above Blackball on the West Coast.
The egg was brought to our facility at Willowbank where it hatched in late March. This was the first successful hatch of a GSK (Roroa) chick using the Nest Egg Programme.
This special kiwi was given the name Waewae.
Waewae spent nine months on a predator free island to enable it to grow big enough to protect itself against predators.
At the end of January 2009 Waewae was returned back into the Paparoa Ranges. This is the first of the three GSK species we have at our facility to be returned back into the wild.
