A successful 2008/09 breeding seasonIssue Date: 21 May 2009
This season has once again shown that through the dedication of DoC staff and those in the Kiwi Breeding centre we are achieving wonderful results with the number of eggs being brought in as well as a 98% hatch rate. Apart from the eggs brought to our facility we have also had a number of wild chicks brought in. Should the eggs be inaccessable for retrieval they are then monitored and once the chick has hatched and begins to leave the burrow they are then caught and brought to us to prevent predation. These chicks are then called wild chicks. Wild chicks are kept in a seperate area to those that have hatched at our facility in case they carry diseases. The breeding season is roughly from July through to March. The statistics for the past two years are as follows:-
2007/08 Season Kiwi Species Eggs hatched Wild chicks Okarito (Rowi) 18 11 Haast Tokoeka 19 0 Great Spotted 3 1
2008/09 Season Kiwi Species Eggs hatched Wild chicks Okarito (Rowi) 41 7 Haast Tokoeka 8 8 Great Spotted 13 0
