First chicks hatchIssue Date: 5 October 2009
The first chick to hatch was a Haast chick. This was a text book hatch - no problems at all. However the second chick to hatch, also a Haast chick, was somewhat different. This chick was mal positioned, which meant that it was not in a position to allow it to internally pip. Little "Button" was facing the wrong way round and had his beak tucked in underneath his leg. The egg was X-Rayed to try and get an indication where his beak was positioned. The staff then had to made a small hole to begin with and over the next two hours slowly peeled small amounts of egg shell and membrane away. After an anxious time the beak was finally located and a small air hole made for Button. For the next two days Button was left alone while he absorbed the remainder of the blood work. On day three Corry-ann and Shaun came to work early in the morning and started the lengthy process of hatching Button out of his shell. It was with a sigh of relief from everyone that Button was a healthy chick. A chick who would not have had a chance of survival in the wild!
