Duvaucel's Gecko

Hoplodactylus duvaucelii

ENDEMIC

DISTRIBUTION: Once widespread across the North Island, they are now mostly confined to offshore islands in the wild, but are becoming more common in the private collections of licensed herpers.

HABITAT: Prefers low scrub on the edges of woodland, where it forages at night. By day it conceals itself under ground litter, fallen tree trunks or occasionally behind loose bark in the burrows of ground-nesting birds.

BREEDING: Mating occurs in spring (September/October) and the young are born from March to May.

FOOD: Diet consists of insects, fruit and nectar.

GENERAL: New Zealand’s largest gecko species reaching lengths of up to 160 mm. Microscopic hooks on their feet enable them to climb glass.
